 Beguiling atmosphere in Fukuoka

Listen

In recent decades, whenever I have traveled to Japan I have opted for landing in Fukuoka on Kyushu island instead of taking the more conventional Incheon-Narita air route, as it is closer than traveling to Tokyo. My four-day intensive family trip to Fukuoka from late October through early November this year was no exception.

Today¡¯s Fukuoka is the product of the fusion of two cities in 1889, when the port city of Hakata and the former castle town of Fukuoka merged into one city. Hakata remains the name of one of Fukuoka¡¯s central areas, containing the main railway station and a major bus terminal. Built along the shores of Hakata Bay, Fukuoka has long been considered the gateway to Japan for continental Asia.

It was interesting for me to learn that the western Hakata shores were chosen by Yuan and Goryeo joint armed forces from the Korean Peninsula as their invasion landing spots in 1274 and 1281. Those intrusions twice were in vain due to the resistance of Japanese local warriors, the lack of food and ammunition, and to top it all off, unimaginable typhoons described as ¡°kamikaze,¡± meaning ¡°divine wind.¡± Genko Historical Museum displays these historical records.

As one of the leading cities for tourism in Japan, I noticed that Fukuoka is highly regarded for its food culture. The city was selected for Lonely Planet¡¯s 2023 Best in Travel list for food, and Hakata, with its local "yatai" (street food stalls), was chosen for The New York Times¡¯ 52 Places to Go in 2023. Fukuokans seemed to maintain their energy for urban daily life by preserving their prefecture¡¯s culinary specialties, including seafood dishes and mountain delicacies such as sushi, "yakitori" (grilled skewers), "mizutaki" (chicken hot pot) and "tonkotsu" (pork broth) ramen. Local yatai in Tenjin and Nakasu in the evening stimulated my appetite.

Fukuoka faces the southeastern port city of Busan across the Korea Strait by a distance of around 220 kilometers. The two sister cities share information about each other at their respective elementary schools, I learned, and Fukuoka also has other overseas sister cities such as Atlanta (U.S.), Guangzhou (China), Bordeaux (France), Ipoh (Malaysia) and Auckland (New Zealand). I heard some Koreans do their round trip to Fukuoka by air due to convenient access.

In Fukuoka, I happened to see a wide, fancy-looking rectangular compound surrounded by an Oriental-type wall, its surfaces painted with shapes that resembled the Pepsi-Cola logo. Later, I found out that it was the site of the Korean Embassy there, and the symbol was the yin and yang of the Taegeuk on the national flag, which is usually depicted in red and blue, but here used only black.

A moderate Halloween celebration was being held during my trip, featuring the 234-meter-high Fukuoka Tower lit up with bright colors at night and special fruit sales in the city¡¯s Iwataya Department Store. A large North Face sportswear shop inside the department store made me pay special interest, contrasting with familiar brands like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and Daiso that I could witness here and there, and even in Korea.

Fukuoka, with its daily hustle and bustle, well-preserved cultural heritage, old-fashioned folk traditions and futuristic spectacles, gave off a vibrant and beguiling atmosphere, and I felt its natural dynamism over my four-day stay in the fifth largest city in Japan.
