KAA, KAFS: Two important civic organizations
that help safeguard Korea, strengthen ties
By Lee sun ho
I recently attended the Korea-America Friendship Night, an end-of-year party, hosted by the Korea America Friendship Society (KAFS) in honor of national defense and memorial veterans in Korea, on behalf of the Korea-America Association (KAA), at the Westin Josun Seoul on Dec. 16.
My focus was on comparing the similarities and differences between the two major annual events hosted by two similar nonprofit, nonpolitical civic organizations: the KAFS (held in December with a focus on military affairs) and the KAA (held around Thanksgiving with a focus on diplomatic relations). Both were established to promote U.S.-ROK amity, with the KAFS founded in 1991 and the KAA in 1963. ROK stands for Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea.
The KAFS has been at the forefront of fostering friendship and mutual understanding between our two steadfast allies by organizing various activities. I understand that this Yuletide party was one of the organization's most important events. The dinner served as a celebration of our enduring alliance, which has grown stronger year after year.
I recall that the Korean War (1950-53) ended in a stalemate, with the border between North and South Korea — the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) — settling near where it had been before the war, along the now-historic 38th parallel.
However, tensions have escalated due to several factors: the unexpected crossing of the MDL by North Korean soldiers, the North's repeated missile launches in recent years and the Moscow-Pyongyang military redline pact, signed on June 18 and ratified on Nov. 11, which involves the deployment of 11,000 North Korean troops to Russia to support its invasion of Ukraine. These developments have raised international concerns, not only in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan but across the entire Indo-Pacific region.
Furthermore, the political turmoil in South Korea, sparked by President Yoon Seok Yeol¡¯s brief and unsuccessful declaration of emergency martial law on Dec. 3 (lasting only six hours), followed by the parliamentary vote for his impeachment and suspension of power on Dec. 14, could create a security vacuum until the Constitutional Court¡¯s review within 180 days. This, coupled with the leadership uncertainty during the U.S. presidential transition from President Joe Biden to President Donald Trump, may heighten concerns about potential aggressive provocations from North Korea.
Under these circumstances, I would like to express my gratitude to the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines for their service and sacrifice in Korea, far from their homeland. They were not only tough soldiers but also genuine catalysts in fostering friendship between the Korean people and the United States. I believe both the KAFS and the KAA should highlight each other's efforts, as their complementary roles are essential in honoring the American and Korean heroes who strengthen our bilateral bonds. The two organizations should pay their respects to the 28,500 U.S. forces personnel in Korea for their unwavering dedication to freedom and peace in our global community.
I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of these two civic organizations in Korea, the KAFS and KAA. Their existence is both encouraging and rewarding. These organizations should work together not only to strengthen their shared roles in advancing the 142-year-old diplomatic relationship between Korea and the United States but also to reinforce the 71-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty, safeguarding the Korean Peninsula against potential regional threats. This partnership, established between Korea and the U.S., aims to expand our joint efforts into broader areas of human cooperation. Let us move forward together, enhancing the enduring bilateral strategic ties between the ROK and the U.S., making them more future-oriented and diversified in the years to come!
